Before reading: I somehow managed to completely skip over The Mist even though I have it sitting on my bookshelf. This is another classic that I haven't read but know the story. So far I have really enjoyed diving deeper into these well-known stories and finally getting the full picture. I'm expecting this to be a similar experience and I am hoping for a quick read. Let's go...into the mist!
After reading: We survived The Mist...or did we? I don't have too much to talk about with this one because it didn't have too much going on. The book does start on July 19th which is the day I read it so that was exciting. The Mist is a novella and a super quick read. It took me a few hours to finish. Honestly, if you're looking for a quick little read this book is perfect. Next time you're on a plane or have a long wait somewhere, I would definitely suggest bringing this one along.
Because it was so short it wasn't as fleshed out as it probably should've been. There's a lot of character development we don't get and there's a lot of unanswered questions. I didn't feel as attached to these characters as I usually do in King's books. I also felt like the plot was a little rushed. All that being said, it was enjoyable and entertaining for what it was. I found it to be very similar to The Stand, almost like a very watered down version of it. It had a lot of similarities in plot as well as some characters.
Now, assuming you've seen the movie, this is probably one of the more famous the-ending-of-the-movie-does-not-match-the-ending-of-the-book scenarios. I always hated the ending of the movie (how could you not?) but I almost liked it more than the book. Almost. Don't come at me. At least with the movie there is an ending. Don't get me wrong, I typically like when books and movies have ambiguous endings. This one felt kind of like a cop-out because it specifically talks about not having an end. I did find it interesting, however, that the way that the movie ends is mentioned in the book, it just never happens.
That's all I've really got to say about this one. I definitely liked it and enjoyed having a nice quick read for a change. It definitely wasn't the best work that I've read of King's but was no where near the worst, either.
Up next is another quick read and the last one out of order before continuing onward, The Plant (installment one).
