After reading: You know, maybe I just don't like sci-fi? Was this book horrible? No. Was it my favorite? Absolutely not. However, to its credit, the last half of the book was quite enjoyable and an easy read. The beginning really dragged for me--a lot of it felt unnecessary. If this book was cut in half, in my opinion, it would be so much better. That being said, I had to endure 600+ pages so if you don't want to listen to me complain, you might want to stop reading right here.
I knew you wanted to listen to me complain. I really didn't take many notes on this one cause in the first half I was just trying to get through it, and then I just read through the second half pretty quickly. I guess I'll start off with the positives because there were some. I do want to reiterate that I hated this book at first but by the time I finished it, it was okay. If you're really into sci-fi, honestly, you might love this one. It just wasn't for me, except for all the King lore it had. We were set in Derry, which I had no idea that's where this book took place. Being in Derry, we got some really fun and strong IT crossovers. We also got some other little fun Easter eggs, like them picking up the radio station that Trisha listened to in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Okay, now I'm gonna complain.
The cringe factor was just too much for me. Everyone talked in catch-phrases. It felt like none of the dialogue was realistic, it was all over the top and corny. Also, if you don't like farts and poop and butts, don't read this book. That is literally the entire first half. The foreshadowing and the political incorrectness was also quite cringey. I know King is kind of known for both of those things but it can be too much, Stephen.
Well...that's all I've got to say about that. I apologize that this review wasn't super long or positive but at the end of the day, I have read worse. Additionally, I am optimistic that next time I will be in much better spirits because we are going back to The Territories with Black House.
