Before reading: Here we are again...getting ready to read a book about a car. Even though I have read car books by King that I enjoyed, I just cannot get excited about starting one. I've heard both good and bad things about this book, I am going in expecting it to be mid. However, as always, I am open-minded and will wait until I finish it to make any decisions. I don't know much about this book except that it is basically a Christine re-do and there was a little introduction to it in On Writing but that is as far as my knowledge on this one goes. Let's give it a whirl!
After reading: Per usual, I was pleasantly surprised. I somehow managed not to take any notes while reading this one so this review should be short and sweet. Of course I should've known a SK story "about a car" wasn't going to be about a car. It was a story about people and uncertainties. I've said it before and I'll say it a million times again, writing about people is what Stephen King does best. This was a great story about a bunch of great characters who all had a shared experience. It was a pleasant and enjoyable read.
Was this the best book ever? Not even close. It had parts that were a tad boring and went on a little longer than it should've but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This novel had The Mist vibes in the best way. It left a lot up to imagination and had ambiguity without being overly frustrating or vague. It had moments that were fun and many that were sad. Overall it really felt like you were with a group of your friends who were telling you a story. Even though it was supernatural and unexplainable, it still felt realistic and like you could imagine yourself being there.
While I wouldn't call this one of my personal favorites, I do believe it was a great book and a good read. If someone told me this was their favorite King book I wouldn't be shocked. If you haven't read this one, I would definitely recommend. One of my favorite parts of this journey has been finding these little hidden gems that never in a million years would I have read had I not been doing this blog. This is officially my fiftieth King book I have read on this journey and I have enjoyed it so much and hope you have, too.
Only one book stands between me and getting to The Dark Tower and that book is Everything is Eventual.
