Before reading: I don't know too much about the actual plot of this book. I do know that it is a crime thriller/noir type book that was written for a series of pulp crime novels. It is supposed to be a quick and easy read and is quite short. This is also the inspiration for the TV show Haven but I don't think they have all that much to do with each other. It'll be fun to read something so different from the past several King books I've read so let's get into it!
After reading: This was a great little read. It was exactly what it was meant to be. It was a mysterious thriller and a quick read. It felt like King but it was also very different from his other work. I would let a child read this book if that tells you anything. Reading this after finishing the Dark Tower series was actually quite welcoming. A nice little palate cleanser, if you will.
Due to the size of this book, I didn't have much of an opportunity to take any notes on it. This wasn't really the type of story that needed notes, to be honest. The one thing that really came to my mind was that this felt like a dramatic version of Only Murders in the Building. The main characters are two older men and a young woman who are talking about a crime together. As a fan of the show, that was a fun addition for me to think about. Other than that, not much thinking was necessary for this read...which isn't a bad thing. Sometimes it is just what the doctor ordered to have a quick, mindless read. Especially after just reading something so heavy.
Would I say this is one of King's bests? Absolutely not, not even close. However, it isn't supposed to be. If you are a crime thriller fan, or if you're a fan of Unsolved Mysteries, I think you would find this book very enjoyable. If you're looking for something to take on a plane ride or to read at the doctor's office, I would one hundred percent recommend this book to you. I think it did exactly what it set out to do.
Ring ring...next up is Cell!
