Before reading: Another one I know nothing about! I know that it is short, so that's exciting after a long read. I also know that when I watched The Curse I saw someone compare it to this book so I have a vague idea (iykyk).
After reading: I'm not too sure what to say quite yet about this one. Even though it was very short and super quick read, I feel like I need to sit with it. With it being so short, there also isn't much to say about it. First and foremost, this was set in Castle Rock. We got familiar views and some quick mentions of familiar people, even as recent as Gwendy. There were a couple things that kind of annoyed me with this story. The main character had people constantly referring to his weight and calling him fat and that just didn't feel realistic (yeah I know this isn't a realistic story). I just don't go up to people and mention their weight, personally. Also, there was a gay couple and a lot of the book had to do with the entire town basically being anti-gay which also didn't feel super realistic for something set in 2018. Besides those, I didn't really have any other issues with the book.
It was a bittersweet read. I can see how someone might find this inspiring or even comforting. For me, I just found it sad. It is kind of a fantastical way to discuss dealing with inevitable death and a terminal condition. If you want answers, this isn't the book for you, but I think that is kind of the point. If you have an open afternoon and want something to read, I would definitely give this a go. I think it is definitely a little hidden gem in King's collection.
Once again, the next read in chronological order is one I have already done which is The Institute. It is one of my favorites and since then I have also been a fan of the tv show. If you want to check out my thoughts on that one, search for it on my site. Otherwise, we are gonna skip ahead to If it Bleeds.
