Before reading: This book was written alongside Owen King, Stephen's son. I have not read any of Owen's work but I do know that Joe is the more prolific son. I have heard some not so great things about this one but I have also heard people say they really enjoy it. The biggest complaint I've seen is that it is much too long, and that is usually a negative for me. As far as the content goes, I have absolutely no idea what this one is about. Let's find out.
After reading: I want to start by saying that I did like this book. I legitimately think this was a good book. I had a couple qualms that I will get into in a moment, but I want to start off with why I think other people don't like this one. This was a very pro-women and almost anti-men book. I've mentioned before that I have noticed that typically when people say they don't like a Stephen King book...it usually has a female main character. As soon as I opened this book and saw the dedication was for Sandra Bland, I knew people would have an issue with it. Take that as you will.
My biggest issue with this book was the length. It was way way too long. A whole bunch of it could have been cut out. I didn't think it was good enough of a book to justify the length. That being said, it was a good story. It was unique, and I had never read anything like it before. I was pretty terrified when I opened the book and it started with multiple pages worth of character references. It did take me quite a while to get to where I could remember who was who. Additionally, I do think there are parts where you could tell who was writing, and that isn't a good thing.
I'm not sure if I agree with how the story played out, but who knows. It was enjoyable and supernatural. It didn't have any connections to other King stories, so if you wanted to read it as your first King book, you definitely could. It is a good time and a good read, just make sure you carve out a month or so to get through it.
Chronologically, our next read is The Outsider. However, that was my first read in this blogging adventure. If you'd like to read my thoughts on that one, you'll have to scroll wayyyyyyy down. Therefore, I will be reading Elevation next. Let's get to it.
